Welcome to my Mystery Novel Page: "The Nobleman"

The first thing you need to know about "The Nobleman" is that it is not your typical murder mystery. It's not your typical thriller. While it most definitely shares a lot of similarities with both of those popular genres, I tried to do something most authors in this field probably avoid: add art.

I'm not talking just about the cover or the "project art" you see above - though I definitely am - but rather, an infusion of literary fiction. A number of inspirations, impressions, struggles, epiphany, and the like all seeped into "The Nobleman" as I wrote.

Truly, a lot of things melded together to form this, rather long, cross-genre novel. Here are some of the details that went into it.

INSPIRATIONS
Writing: John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" & Crash (by screenwriter Paul Haggis)
Film: Crash (again, directed by Paul Haggis, 2004) & LOST (the TV series)
Fine Art: paintings by Jay Walker - whose sketches from the serialized novel can be bought in my store
Intellectual: (1) Meditations on "human equality," very often in relation to the American ideal of "All men are created equal," and (2) the idea of every human heart and mind being capable of the deepest depths of depravity as well as the highest heights of grace - sometimes moments apart.

So, I'll admit, I'm kind of just laying this out there. I don't know if this is incredibly abnormal for an author to divulge such depth for a novel genre that is sometimes perceived and consumed like a literary pop-tart, i.e. rapid-consume literature. But - this novel was a deeper meditation for me than might meet the eye. It was also a real challenge given the diversity of people I sought to incorporate in the plot.

THE SERIALIZATION
From the earliest weeks of creating "The Nobleman," I became obsessed with the idea of publishing it as a serial novel online. So, not only did I write it in a very episodic manner - which works beautifully for developing the main characters, I researched different ways I could try a serial publication, and at last built a website and ran an online serial publication with . . . very little success. So, the idea of serialization has been safely stowed back in the locker of writing ideas and dreams, and the book is available as complete work.

THE FUTURE
As of November 2017, the cover has been re-designed to be a less artsy, and perhaps better targeted to the Mystery audience out there. The Nobleman is available at Amazon in ebook and paperback. Beware, the paperback is a beast.

That's a bit about "The Nobleman." If you haven't already, I hope you'll give it a try. If you're tempted but all in, try a free sample of the first 6 chapters. Just click the button below.
